Artist Biography

Steve Davis is a woodturner who lives near Guthrie, Oklahoma. He began turning as a rewarding way to create beautiful and , in some cases, functional objects from wood. Steve does much of his work in woods that are indigenous to Central Oklahoma. He also, however, creates turnings from exotic woods and woods which grow in other regions of the United States.

In the early stages of his work as a woodturning artist, Steve turned many pieces that were smaller or intermediate in size (e.g. 12 inches or less in diameter and 15 inches or less in height). He still creates turnings in that size range, particularly custom pieces. Over time, however, Steve has gravitated toward much larger turned pieces. Those large, more complex, one-of-a-kind turnings have become something of a speciality for him.

Woodturning as an art form, and for use in decorative and design contexts, is unique in its ability to combine innate appeal and warmth of wood with truly imaginative physical forms. There is something special about the look and feel of wood that is comforting and almost invites human touch. For Steve, turning wood provides a wonderful opportunity for creative expression and fulfillment. In addition it is a chance to exercise physical and technical abilities in ways that produce truly unique pieces.
