Artist Biography
"Paint
what you love” is advice often given to artists.
In 24 years of painting, Janice Cobb
has returned again and again to two of her favorite
subjects: water and dogs.
After
living all her life in landlocked states, when
Janice lived briefly in California she discovered
a fascination with the ocean and all things
associated with living by the sea. The tides,
fog, atmosphere, marine life, boats and docks
– all contributed to the feeling that the ocean
is a living thing. Something is always “happening”
by the water. With a passion for bright colors,
she discovered an interest in painting boats,
especially colorful fishing boats. Whether
lobster or shrimp boats, kayaks, or a harbor
full of white boats and sails, they are all
intriguing subjects.
“I can’t
remember a time when I didn’t love dogs”, the
artist says. In earlier paintings, she frequently
added dogs to landscapes and beach scenes.
This progressed to focusing on the dogs themselves.
“I think they deserve to be the center of attention
and to be captured and remembered forever.
With my earlier experience in painting landscapes
and still life, I feel that I can place the
dogs in a setting which compliments them and
creates a painting which will stand the test
of time. When I go to take pictures for commissions,
I have the added pleasure of getting to know
both the dogs and their owners.”
“I have
recently begun painting cats, also, and I can
see another new world opening up!”
Janice
Cobb’s work has been seen at Gilcrease Museum’s
“American Art in Miniature” since 1999, Philbrook
Museum’s Festival of Trees, and Tulsa’s International
Mayfest Invitational Gallery. She is a member
of the AKC Museum of the Dog Artist Registry.
