Keith's first gold award came at the age of 15 in
a statewide oil painting competition for high school
students. Since then, his sculptures and paintings
have won gold, silver and People's Choice Awards
in various juried art shows. "As an artist you can
really only compete with yourself.", Keith says.
"Each time I begin a new work the challenge is to
create a better piece than the last one. I keep learning
and experimenting, but always striving to do the
best job I can."
Keith was teaching high school and creating sculptures
and paintings as a hobby in 1972. Suddenly, his life
got turned upside down when Wells Fargo Bank purchased
his whole edition of 5' x 6' stagecoaches with six
horses. These were later shipped to the Bank's major
offices all over the world. This purchase opened
the door to several fine art galleries. His hobby
became a full time profession, but best of all, it
financed his dream of owning a cattle ranch.
Since then, Keith has become a prolific artist in
both painting and sculpture. His oil paintings number
in the hundreds. His work is collected by individuals
and corporations from all over the world.
Northland Press of Flagstaff, Arizona, published
Keith's book, entitled "Jumping Cholla", Genesis
of a Bronze Sculpture. The book details the creation
of a bronze sculpture from the initial idea to teh
finished bronzse piece. It covers methods used to
create the working model, mold making, and explanations
of the lost wax process, metal pouring, final assembly
and various patina methods. The book is filled with
drawings and photographs which are most helpful to
beginning artists and collectors who need a good
understanding of the sculpture process.
His love of American History began as a child. The
horse was always his most favored subject. His horses
and cowboys (usually Buckaroos) are depicted in all
kinds of situations. For Keith, the subject lends
itself to sculpture as well as oil painting. He say,
"You can use all kinds of landscape, animals and
people when you do western art. I never get bored
or run out of subjects to explore with my painting
or sculpture work."
Keith, a Prix de West artist, resides on his ranch
in Northern California.
